Rural electrification

Access to electricity supports economic and social development, while extending reliable power infrastructure to remote areas remains an important infrastructure requirement. Rural electrification can support agriculture, small industries, essential services, and other activities that depend on a consistent electricity supply. Strengthening transmission and distribution infrastructure is therefore important for improving the reliability and reach of power networks in rural areas.

The Government of India launched the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) in 2014 with objectives including rural electrification, separation of agriculture and non-agriculture feeders, and strengthening and augmentation of sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure in rural areas. The scheme has since been closed, while rural power infrastructure continues to be supported through subsequent government programmes and initiatives.
