Faqs on Street Lighting Answered by a Street Light Manufacturer in India

Be it big cities, small towns or villages, street fighting is essential everywhere. Street lighting makes the roads safer for motorists, pedestrians and others. Besides promoting safety, it also increases the quality of life by extending the day. If you are an infrastructure and EPC contractor planning to buy, here we, as a reputed street light manufacturer in India, have curated some FAQs on street lighting and their answers that you will find useful:

Question 1: Which type of lighting is used for street lights?

High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are the most commonly used bulbs for street lighting. They produce white light and are preferred because they are low maintenance. Metal halide light bulbs are also popular as they emit true white light. This makes it suitable for sports fields and stadiums. HPS and metal halide lamps are more preferred over mercury lamps as the latter is hazardous.

Question 2: Are all street lights the same height?

The street lamp’s height is usually 6 meters, 8 meters, 10 meters, 12 meters, or 15 meters. The street light height is decided by the breadth of the road surface.

As one of the reputed street lamp post suppliers, we can custom-engineer street and road lighting solutions of different styles, heights and materials to meet your specific requirement.

Question 3: What are the factors that determine the height of the street light poles?

Here are some factors that need to be considered when determining the height of street light poles:

  1. Width of the road: The width of the area illuminated is equal to the height of the street light. A road that is 5 meters wide needs a 5 meters high pole.
  2. Vehicle density: The lamp's height is also decided by the vehicle density on the road and the kind of vehicle passing. For heavy vehicle routes, high-end street lights are needed. For light vehicle routes, low-level street lights are installed.
  3. Spacing between street lights: The distance between street light poles should be 3-4 times the height of the poles.

Question 4: How to choose a street light?
When selecting a street light, consider the following options:

  1. Mounts: Street lights are available in different mounts such as pole mounted fixtures and slipfitter and trunnion mount models.
  2. Lumens: The more lumens, the brighter the light source is. You should consider how much light you need for the end use.
  3. Wattage : Wattage is the measure of how much energy a bulb consumes. Energy-efficient bulbs such as LED lamps use less energy to give off the same amount of brightness (lumens). As LED lamps are brighter and consume less energy, they are often preferred over incandescent and fluorescent lamps.
  4. Durability:  Street lights are often exposed to extreme weather conditions, and, therefore, it is important to select on the basis of wind testing rating.
